Brentford boost European push with win at Newcastle

The winger struck for the second game running, restoring Brentford’s lead shortly after Bruno Guimarães had drawn Newcastle level from the penalty spot.
The Magpies had gone in front in the 24th minute when Sven Botman powered a header into the net after a second delivery from a corner caused problems in the Brentford box.
Brentford grew into the game and were rewarded before the break. Ouattara’s early cross from the left was met by Vitaly Janelt, who headed past Nick Pope to equalise.
The visitors then turned the game around just before half-time when Igor Thiago sent Pope the wrong way from the spot following a handball by Jacob Murphy.
The hosts pushed harder after the interval and were handed a route back into the game when VAR ruled that Guimarães had been fouled during a quick counter-attack. The midfielder kept his nerve to make it 2-2.
However, the Bees had the final say. With five minutes remaining, Mathias Jensen lifted a pass over the defence for Ouattara, who broke clear and finished low past Pope to secure all three points.
The result moves Brentford up to seventh and strengthens their European ambitions, while Newcastle stay 12th.
