He walked over to the scorer’s table to report for his match, still wearing sweatpants over his singlet. His teammates yelled to warn him about the impending wardrobe malfunction.

Dundee coach Garrett Stevens just shook his head when asked about moment.

“He’s been wrestling since he was in diapers,” the coach said.

The wrestler can be forgiven for his momentary lapse in concentration.

Dundee overmatched its competition, beginning its quest for a ninth consecutive Division 3 state championship with routs of Stockbridge 79-0 and Milan 82-0.

“We’re getting healthy,” said Stevens, whose team improved to 21-3. “We got to rotate kids in. We had a lot of young kids in there.”

Stevens was not thrilled that Milan chose to forfeit eight matches in the finals.

Rocco Redmon (215), Brayden LaPlante (120), Mason Katschor (138) and Avery Lane (165) logged pins and Dom Sindone (106) and Mason Haines (126) won by technical fall.

Milan beat Pinckney 56-19 in the semifinals as Maximus Anthony (285), Patrick McShane (132), Alexander Konopinski (144) and Samir Jomaa (175) all delivered first-period pins.

The Big Reds also got major decisions from Jaxen Straub (113) and Jackson Hoover (157).

“It’s been a long time, probably a decade,” Milan coach Adam Caballero said when asked how long it has been since Milan beat Pinckney.

Caballero believes Milan made big strides in his third season as head coach of his alma mater.

“I am happy,” he said. “We’ve made a lot of progress and we’re super young. Half of our team is freshmen and new wrestlers.”
