Ilia Malinin won a gold medal, but it wasn’t the one we expected.
The 21-year-old skating phenom was the overwhelming favorite to win men’s singles gold, especially after holding a five-point lead after the men’s short program, but he finished eighth overall after a rough outing in the free skate.
Team USA took gold in the team competition, thanks to Malinin spearheading the Americans’ push as an unexpected entry.
Madison Chock and Evan Bates claimed silver at ice dancing in the United States’ other trip to the podium after a controversial finish.
Who are the Olympic figure skating medal winners?
Liu ended a 24-year gold medal drought in her event for the Americans. Sakamoto took silver and Nakai bronze.
While Malinin led a team competition that included Liu, Amber Glenn, Ellie Kam, Daniel O’Shea and Bates and Chock to gold (Japan won silver, Italy bronze), the ice dancing pair was upset in their own event.
Chock and Bates took silver, falling short to the French team of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron, which was crowned with the gold. Should it have been?
Going into the free dance, Beaudry and Cizeron led Chock and Bates by 0.46 points, virtually making it a toss-up in the final performance.
Chock and Bates delivered a seemingly flawless showing, while Beaudry and Cizeron had some slight mistakes. There was speculation a French judge favored her country’s team.
Canada’s Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier won bronze in the event.
Kazakhstan's Mikhail Shaidorov won the gold medal in men’s singles while silver and bronze went to a pair of skaters from Japan: Yuma Kagiyama and Shun Sato.
In pairs figure skating, Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara of Japan won gold, Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava of Georgia won silver, and the German team of Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin won bronze.
The American teams of Spencer Akira Howe and Emily Chan, and Kam and O’Shea finished seventh and ninth, respectively.
The last time the U.S. won a medal in pairs remains 1988, when Jill Watson and Peter Oppegard won bronze in Calgary. The 38-year drought is the longest between medals for any figure skating discipline in U.S. Olympic history.
