SIU investigating fatal police-involved shooting in Kincardine; Hamilton man charged in assault

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a police-involved shooting in Kincardine on Saturday that left a suspect dead.

At approximately 5:50 p.m, Ontario Provincial Police officers from the South Bruce Detachment attempted to arrest an individual who had been involved in multiple incidents earlier in the day across South Bruce and Huron County, the OPP said in a social media post .
Police said the individual was located at a residence on the Bruce-Saugeen Townline by officers with the emergency response team and the canine unit.
The OPP said police discharged their firearm during the interaction and the individual was pronounced deceased.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency that conducts investigations where police are involved in incidents involving a death, serious injury, discharge of a firearm at a person, or sexual assault.
Police have not released the identity of the deceased.
Hamilton man charged in alleged hate-motivated assault
A 28-year-old man has been charged in an alleged hate-motivated assault in downtown Hamilton on Saturday.
Hamilton Police said officers responded to a report of an assault in the area of Augusta St.
Police said the woman was standing on the street when she was approached by an intoxicated male who began verbally harassing her using derogatory language.
“Despite attempts to de-escalate the interaction, the accused struck the victim in the face, knocking off and breaking her glasses,” police said in a news release.
Police said the woman ended up being pulled to the ground and kicked.
The man was arrested and charged with assault and resisting a peace officer.
Police said the incident has been referred to the Hamilton Police Hate Crime Unit for further investigation.
