Hillary Clinton testifying at Epstein probe behind closed doors

Hillary Clinton is testifying in front of U.S. lawmakers Thursday in New York, as the congressional investigation into late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein will also include former President Bill Clinton.

The former U.S. Secretary of State under President Barack Obama will give her deposition to members of the Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee behind closed doors in the couple’s hometown of Chappaqua, located north of New York City.

The testimony, which will be filmed and a transcript expected to be released a short time later after committee members approve it, comes after months of negotiations with the couple over the scheduling and parameters of the deposition.

Republican Chairman James Comer and Democratic ranking member Robert Garcia have both said they plan to be in attendance, NBC News reports .

The former president is expected to give testimony on Friday.

Couple subpoenaed last year

The Clintons became a target of the committee last July when Scott Perry, a Republican House Representative from Pennsylvania, made a motion to subpoena the couple as part of the panel’s Epstein probe during a hearing of the Federal Law Enforcement Subcommittee.

Others on the list included former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorneys General Eric Holder and Merrick Garland.

The subpoenas were issued by Comer the next month, and the Clintons were scheduled to testify in October. However, that date was moved to December and then January after scheduling conflicts.

“Everyone that was included in that subpoena has already either been interviewed by the oversight committee or sent in a statement that they had never met Epstein and had no knowledge of the investigation except the Clintons,” Comer told reporters Thursday morning ahead of the first deposition.

“We worked for six months to get the Clintons to come in, and then they acted like they were coming in and then they didn’t show up.”

Many questions unanswered

Comer said the couple hasn’t answered many questions about what they know or if they have any involvement with Epstein and his accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, the British former socialite who is serving a 20-year sentence for conspiring to sexually abuse underage girls with the late financier.

“No one is accusing at this moment the Clintons of any wrongdoing,” Comer said. “They have due process, but we have a lot of questions.”

Committee members are also investigating how Epstein, who was found dead in a New York City jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting sex trafficking of minors charges, accumulated so much wealth and how he was able to surround himself with the most powerful men in the world.
