Maintenance at Waltloo Substation in Tshwane
According to the notice, “Customers supplied by the Waltloo Substation are hereby informed of a planned power outage scheduled for Sunday, 8 March.”
Technicians from the City’s Energy and Electricity Business Unit will conduct urgent work on key infrastructure at the substation. The maintenance will focus on the 132/11kV line and the 35MVA Transformer 1A, both of which play a crucial role in distributing electricity to the surrounding areas.
The city confirmed that the work is necessary to ensure a stable and efficient electricity supply. By addressing technical issues proactively, the municipality aims to reduce the risk of unexpected breakdowns in future.
Infrastructure upgrade to improve safety
In addition to maintenance, technicians will replace ageing equipment at the facility. The city stated that the work “will also include the replacement of an ageing wet type 11kV cable box with a modern dry type unit that does not use insulating oil, thereby improving operational safety and environmental compliance.”
This upgrade marks an essential step in modernising infrastructure. The newer dry-type unit reduces environmental risks associated with oil-based systems and enhances overall operational safety at the substation.
Furthermore, the city emphasised that the planned power outage forms part of a strategy to strengthen infrastructure performance. The city noted that “this planned maintenance forms part of the city’s ongoing programme to strengthen the reliability and long-term performance of critical electricity infrastructure.”
The city has also issued a safety warning during the outage period. Customers must treat all electrical points as live at all times to prevent accidents when power is restored.
