Report: Broncos 'had interest' in RB before Lions traded him to Texans

· Yahoo Sports

As the Denver Broncos look for a running back, one option is now off the board.

The Detroit Lions have agreed to trade running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans, according to multiple reports (via Texans Wire). The deal will not become official until the NFL's new league year begins on March 11.

Houston agreed to a relatively steep price for the running back, sending a 2026 fourth-round pick, a 2027 seventh-round pick and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs to Detroit in exchange for Montgomery.

The Broncos "had interest" in a potential Montgomery trade, but the price tag was "too high," according to a report from Benjamin Allbright of KOA Radio. It's no surprise that Denver was not willing to pay that price, especially after Cam Skattebo and Woody Marks were picked in the fourth round of last year's NFL draft.

After RJ Harvey, the Broncos only have two other running backs — Cody Schrader and Deuce Vaughn — under contract for 2026, so running back remains a big need in Denver. It remains to be seen if the team will re-sign J.K. Dobbins, but the veteran has said he would like to remain with the Broncos.
