Priest charged with sex assault of minor; another handgun seized during traffic stop

York Regional Police have charged a 47-year-old Coptic Church priest from East Gwillimbury with the historical sexual assault of a minor.

Cops said the investigation began in November, when the victim came forward to report that they had allegedly been sexually assaulted twice between 1996 and 1999.

At the time of the assault, the victim was under the age of 16 and the accused was not a priest.

Michelle (a.k.a. Michael) Shafik, 47, of East Gwillimbury was charged on Feb. 26 with sexual assault and sexual interference.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims and have released a photo of the suspect.

Handgun seized during traffic stop

Peel Cops have charged an 18-year-old Brampton man after a traffic stop for careless driving led to the seizure of a loaded, unauthorized firearm.

Officers were on patrol Friday in the Kennedy-Clarence Rds. area of Brampton when they observed a vehicle speeding and making unsafe lane changes. Upon stopping the vehicle, officers conducted a search and allegedly found a loaded Glock 17 handgun and a magazine with 17 rounds of ammunition.

Malachi King-Favours has been charged with six firearm-related offences and one of careless driving.

Teens accused of assault in Stoney Creek

Hamilton Police have charged three female youths between the ages of 14 and 15 after an alleged assault near a Stoney Creek business.

Last Friday around noon, police responded to reports that the victim, a teenage student, was at the business during her lunch period when the incident occurred. Cops said the victim had been approached by several youths and agreed to step outside the establishment, but was then physically assaulted by three masked female youths.

A staff member intervened, causing the suspects to flee.

The victim later returned to a nearby secondary school, where staff contacted emergency services. Hamilton Paramedic Service transported her to a hospital as a precaution and she was later reported to be in stable condition.

As a result of the investigation, three female youths have been charged with assault and disguise with intent to commit an offence.

Stolen vehicles seized at auto body shop

The Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police have charged a man after locating stolen vehicles at an auto body shop in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township.

On Saturday, Peterborough County OPP officers received information on the possible location of a vehicle that had been reported as stolen. Officers went to a business on Hwy. 7 and executed a search warrant on Sunday, locating the vehicle in question as well as another that had been reported stolen from another region. Both vehicles were seized.

During their search, paperwork related to another stolen vehicle along with various car parts also believed to be from stolen vehicles were located and seized.

COPPER WIRE:

Wellington OPP have charged four people from Guelph after officers found a group of individuals loading suspicious items into the back of a vehicle.

Upon further investigation, about $1,200 worth of copper telecommunication wire was recovered. Damage to property and infrastructure was estimated to exceed $10,000.

The four were each charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
