Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Soon, all jails in Madhya Pradesh will have high-voltage security. The government has decided to equip circle jails, district jails and sub-jails with electric fencing, making prisoner escape nearly impossible. Earlier, only central jails had such systems.

Under the new plan, a solar-powered electric fencing system will be installed on prison walls, which not only triggers an intrusion alarm but also delivers a shock to anyone attempting to escape. Tenders have been issued, and work is expected to begin shortly.

MP has 11 central jails, 2 circle jails, 39 district jails and 73 sub-jails. Prisoners have escaped in the past. In a notable incident on Diwali day in 2016, 8 SIMI terrorists broke out of Bhopal jail after killing a jail employee. Police tracked and killed them in an encounter.
How solar electric fencing works
The fencing consists of high-voltage wires powered by solar energy. Anyone touching or biting the wires triggers an alarm and receives a shock. A jail official said climbing walls will no longer be easy, adding that the shock will deter any thought of escape. CCTV systems will also be installed in district and sub-jails that lack them. Solar energy is expected to save electricity costs.
