Report: Cowboys 'probably not going there' with 2x-Pro Bowler; still seeking LB help

· Yahoo Sports

The Cowboys addressed two gaping holes in their defense on the first day of free agency action by trading for edge rusher Rashan Gary and coming to terms with safety Jalen Thompson.

Day Two dawned with the team still seeking help at the linebacker position after most of the top names- Devin Lloyd, Quay Walker, Nakobe Dean, Demario Davis, Quincy Williams among them- were snatched up Monday. Things apparently even came down to the wire with Dean, but he opted instead for Las Vegas on a "gut feeling."

That has left the Cowboys- or at least their fanbase- in a bit of a scramble with the remaining available options. But according to one insider, positional scarcity won't be enough to panic the front office into doing a questionable deal for a polarizing player.

NFL Network insider Jane Slater has been keeping an eye on six-year veteran Patrick Queen. The Steelers are thought to be open to moving him after just two seasons in Pittsburgh, and after talks with Dean, Walker, and Lloyd went nowhere, Dallas was thought to be interested.

In a Tuesday morning post to X, though, Slater says: "the Patrick Queen idea may have hit a snag," with a source telling her the Cowboys were "probably not going there" with the 26-year-old.

On paper, Queen would seem to be precisely the kind of player the Cowboys would normally pursue. Taken 28th overall by Baltimore in 2020, he would satisfy the organization's longstanding obsession with collecting former first-round draft picks. Additionally, he comes with two Pro Bowl berths and a second-team All-Pro nod on his résumé.

Queen has never missed a game in his six NFL seasons, starting 107 out of a possible 108 contests, including playoffs (his only non-start was a postseason wild-card game in his rookie year). And he's finished every single season as either the No. 1- or No. 2-leading tackler on his team.

But Queen inspires the same sort of reaction from fans as Kenneth Murray did from Cowboys Nation in 2025. Poor coverage skills, missed tackles, and poor pursuit angles are mentioned frequently, at least by critics. The two players were, in fact, drafted just five slots apart from one another in 2020. Even though Queen does have about 200 more career tackles than Murray, perhaps it is an apples-for-apples scenario that's simply not worth whatever the cost would be in a trade.

Whatever the reason, despite Murray's lone season in Dallas being an obvious bust, there appears to be little motivation to make Queen his replacement in 2026.
