Yahoo Sports' Kevin O’Connor has spotted a noticeable shift in Jaylen Brown’s play for the Boston Celtics recently that could be more than coincidence.

“Jaylen Brown’s free throw rate is way up ever since he criticized SGA’s (foul baiting) tactics," O'Connor wondered aloud during a recent episode of The Kevin O'Connor Show. "Coincidence?”

Brown has indeed seen his trips to the free-throw line increase since publicly calling out Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s style earlier this month.

Brown is averaging 28.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game in the 2025-26 season while shooting 80.2 percent from the line. Recent outings against strong Western Conference teams have featured more aggressive drives and physical finishes, resulting in higher free-throw attempts. Whether it is a deliberate adjustment or simply the natural evolution of his attack, the timing has fueled discussion.

Boston’s offense has benefited from Brown’s willingness to attack the rim with greater frequency. His ability to finish through contact remains elite, and the uptick in free throws adds another layer to an already potent scoring arsenal.

Brown's had a career year that's seen him be named an All-Star starter for the first time. His two-way impact remains a cornerstone for Boston, with strong defensive versatility pairing with career-high scoring efficiency.
