Barcelona target clears air around his rumoured contract renewal: ‘I have to flatly deny it’

Nico Schlotterbeck briefly emerged as Barcelona’s top defensive target for the summer before being linked to Real Madrid and eventually seeing the steam behind his name die down owing to rumours that he was close to a renewal.

Indeed, word had it that the Borussia Dortmund star was close to agreeing on a renewal with his current employers until 2031, with some outlets even claiming that the agreement was in place.

Needless to say, the development saw the player’s links with Barcelona and Real Madrid die down quickly.

A statement from the player

Speaking to the media after Germany’s recent game against Ghana, the defender denied any form of agreement with Dortmund over a renewal and threw the door to a transfer back open in the process.

“I’m glad you asked me, because today I read it in your news.

To be honest, I have to flatly deny it (that his renewal with Dortmund is close to taking place). Unfortunately, we haven’t reached that point yet.”

Explaining the setback that led to talks being frozen all of a sudden, Schlotterbeck stated that the man in charge of negotiating with him had suddenly been changed, leading to talks having to restart.

“I negotiated with Sebastian for a long time. Sebastian is no longer here. Now Ole will be my contact person, along with Lars.

That’s why I was waiting for the question with interest. But what you say is not true at all.”

Finally, he acknowledged that he had already begun talks with the new men in charge but confirmed that an agreement was still far off.

“I have already talked to him, but we have not reached the point where the renewal is imminent. It’s also bad for BVB fans, but as I’ve already said, it’s not an easy situation for me.”
