Betts has worked with Yamamoto and his trainer Osamu Yada all spring, and he’s taken up new stretches, workouts like throwing javelins and even carrying Yada on his shoulders. Despite the odd nature of these exercises, Betts couldn’t be happier.
“They definitely changed my perspective, changed my life, my game,” Betts said.
As far as why he picked up the regiment, Betts’ reasoning was rather straightforward: If Yamamoto’s so good, he’s doing something right.
“I just want to get better,” Betts said. “I’m not content with where I’m at. I want to continue to get better in everything and be able to teach my son how to be great. I have to go through it first. When you’re open-minded, there’s endless possibilities. Yoshi came over, and they gave him $300 million, and he hadn’t even thrown a pitch, so I’m pretty sure he does something right.”

Betts is already off to a better start than last year, avoiding any mysterious ailments or setbacks. Betts missed the first several games of 2025 due to an illness which caused him to lose 20 pounds.
He struggled through most of the season, ending the year with the worst numbers of his MLB career. He hit 20 homers and had 82 RBIs — slightly more than his previous season totals despite playing 36 more games — managing to end the season just above league average with a 104 OPS+ thanks to a late-season surge. The .732 OPS he had throughout the season ranked as the worst in hi career to date.
With a better start this season and a fully rejuvenated Betts, Manager Dave Roberts believes there’s a lot more in store from the shortstop this year.
“Mookie [Betts] will be in the MVP conversation this year,” Roberts said.
Only time will tell if Betts can return to his MVP form, but he seems to be confident heading into the new season with his training regimen.
